UN Hails Saudi Arabia’s Promotion of Human Rights

The United Nations praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts in protecting human rights, highlighting the constructive cooperation between it and Riyadh. Deputy Resident Representative, Firas Gharaibeh cited the Kingdom’s protection and bolstering of human rights through national networks and mechanisms. Meanwhile, President of the Saudi Human Rights Commission Dr. Bandar bin Mohammed Al-Aiban said the Kingdom has achieved great progress in the protection and promotion of human rights through its legislation, judicial, executive and administrative systems. Human well-being, protection and promotion of their rights and respect for their dignity is Saudi Arabias main goal, he told a panel discussion organized by the commission on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, and through its governmental and non-governmental institutions, has been carrying out intensive campaigns and activities aimed at spreading human rights, he continued. “Todays meeting is only a part of an integrated system of these efforts. While we are here, seminars, workshops, courses and exhibitions are being held in various governmental and non-governmental bodies, in relationship or under its supervision of the commission,” he explained. Aiban said that objective observers find that the Kingdom has made great progress in the promotion and protection of human rights. The Vision of the Kingdom 2030 covers many areas of human rights, such as the right to life, security, health, education and empowerment of women, promotion of participation in political and public life, he said. Moreover, he revealed that the Kingdom’s National Human Rights Strategy is currently under review. It encompasses all principles aimed at protecting and promoting human rights, in accordance with the principles of Islamic law, the Basic Law on Governance and other regulations, as well as regional and international human rights conventions. The Kingdom is also guided by a number of regional and international declarations, Aiban stated.
