UN envoy Martin Griffiths arrived Monday in the Yemeni capital Sanaa in a new effort to convince the Iran-backed Houthi militia leaderships to implement the Sweden ceasefire agreement and withdraw from the city of Hodeidah and its ports. Informed sources said Griffiths is expected to meet with retired Dutch Maj. Gen. Patrick Cammaert, who is heading a UN mission charged with monitoring the ceasefire and with ensuring other commitments agreed at peace talks in Sweden last month are honored. He will also hold talks with Houthi leaders to push them accept Cammaert’s plan. The militias opposed the retired general’s plan for Hodeidah, accused him of being biased to the legitimate government and requested his removal. Last month, Yemen’s warring parties met in Sweden and agreed on a ceasefire in Hodeidah and on a prisoner exchange. However, Houthis failed to comply with the Sweden deal and withdraw from the ports of Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Issa, as well as from the city itself. Griffiths’ visit to Yemen comes days after Cammaert’s convoy came under fire in Hodeidah city. On Wednesday, Griffiths is expected to travel with Cammaert from Sanaa to Riyadh to meet representatives of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, including President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Separately, Yemen’s parliament uncovered Monday that 30 of its members residing in Sanaa, were threatened by Houthis. It called on the UN to intervene to protect those deputies from any illegal measures taken by the militias. Mohammed al-Shadadi, deputy speaker of the parliament, told Asharq Al-Awsat: “We rely on the UN envoy to quickly intervene and exert pressure on militias to stop their violations and to give MPs the freedom to stay or leave Sanaa.”
