King Salman hands out awards at King Faisal International Prize ceremony

RIYADH: King Salman handed out awards to the winners of the 2019 King Faisal Prize (KFP) at a ceremony that took place in Al Faisaliah Hotel in Riyadh on Sunday.  The KFP recognizes individuals and institutions for significant contributions to their field. The prestigious prize, now in its 41st year, honors exceptional achievements in five categories: service to Islam, Islamic studies, Arabic language and literature, medicine and science. The International University of Africa in Khartoum won the KFP for service to Islam, Prof. Abdelali Mohamed Oudrhiri from Morocco and Prof. Mahmoud Fahmy Hegazi from Egypt won the prize for Arabic language and literature, and Prof. Bjorn Reino Olsen and Prof. Steven L. Teitelbaum from the US won the prize for medicine. Prof. Allen Joseph Bard and Prof. Jean M.J. Frechet from the US won the KFP for science.  Prof. Frechet is the senior vice president for research, innovation, and economic development at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Jeddah. He has trained hundreds of researchers at KAUST, and said “While I did not carry out research personally at KAUST, my nine years in the Kingdom have been a true highlight of my career.” King Salman congratulated the winners on receiving their awards.
