Egypts Public Prosecution ordered on Monday an investigation into the rumors over the disappearance and raping of a female student at Al-Azhar University in Assiut, after days of rumors on social media. Egypts Prime Minister media adviser Hani Suliman Younis denied these rumors. Prosecutor General Nabil Ahmad Sadek ordered Monday chasing down whoever published news or rumors that could endanger public opinion, threaten people, and harm public interest through writing or publishing rumors about the incident. The news was circulated over social media, including pages of Muslim Brotherhood that is considered a terrorist group by Egypt. Dozens of students demonstrated at the university calling for the truth to be revealed about the incident. Al-Azhar University denied the incident saying in a statement that suspicious social media pages and websites are behind promoting these rumors. The statement stressed that Al-Azhar would never hide or deny anything that would harm its “sons and daughters”. “Since the first hours of the spread of these rumours, Al-Azhar has checked up on the news and found that it was false,” read the statement. The university contacted the student who said she was spending a vacation with her family, it added. Dr. Usama Abdu-Raouf, Vice-President of Al-Azhar University, warned that if students get involved in promoting the baseless rumors, they will be expelled. Abdu-Raouf stressed that there should be rules for social media and ways to discover fake accounts on the internet.
