NATO expressed on Monday its concern over Turkey’s plan to deploy a Russian missile defense system. Speaking from Ankara, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the consequences of the deployment of the S-400 system are worrying, as Washington has made clear it would impose sanctions. NATO would want to avoid conditions where allies impose sanctions on one another, he added after talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. Last week, Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said Turkey was not distancing itself from the NATO alliance by buying the defense system. Turkey and the United States, NATO allies, have been at odds over Ankaras move to buy the S-400, which Washington says are not compatible with NATO systems and may threaten the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets, of which Turkey is a prospective buyer and partner in production, Reuters reported.
