President of Guinea Alpha Conde condemned the “terrorist” violations committed by Iran in the Arabian Gulf. Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, he said that the terrorism targeting Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region today is the same terrorism that threatens the rest of the world. This is a dangerous phenomenon that needs to be firmly confronted, he added. “We must all stand with Saudi Arabia against terrorism,” he stressed, highlighting the Kingdom’s status as the focal point of Islam. “Any harm to the Kingdom is an attack against Islam,” Conde said, while hailing the great efforts exerted by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz in preserving peace and security in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. Moreover, he said that Guinea was among the first countries to voice support for the anti-terrorism coalition proposed by Saudi Arabia. It views the Kingdom as the symbol of Islam and as a strategic ally, he told Asharq Al-Awsat. “We are very confident that Saudi Arabia will be victorious in this war. It will restore security and stability in the Middle East,” he said. Terrorism, Conde continued, is also affecting Africa, from Libya, to Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and Chad. No country is spared the threat of terrorism, he warned, saying that he has become convinced that combating terror was essential. Unity and cooperation are necessary to confront terror, he stated, noting that United Nations peacekeepers were in Congo for years, but the situation there has not improved. He therefore, called for allowing African forces to defend their own countries with international intelligence, military and logistic support. Guinea has been spared terrorist attacks. Conde explained that this is due to his decision to restructure the army when he came to power in 2010. He said the military suffered from a lack of discipline, but his reforms introduced positive change. “We cannot confront the threat of terrorism with a sick army and weak security institution,” he went on to say. Conde also listed his economic reforms that helped improve living conditions in Guinea. The improvement in these conditions would stand against attempts by extremists to infiltrate society, he explained.
