Kuwait received from Iraq human remains believed to belong to slain Kuwaiti Prisoners of War (POW) pending local forensics examination. The handover was organized at al-Abdali border checkpoint and attended by Kuwaiti and Iraqi officials. The head of the Kuwaiti delegation at the international tripartite commission and sub-committee tasked with following up the issue, Rabie al-Adsani, asserted that Kuwait received the remains from the Iraqi authorities. In light of the developments, Adsani noted that Kuwait had addressed an official request to transfer the human remains to the country to complete the examination at the Interior Ministrys department of criminal evidence. Adsani explained that the Ministry, which keeps a DNA database for Kuwaiti POWs, will conduct a test to determine whether the samples match, adding that DNA extraction for examination is a very complex and time consuming process. The tests will continue in Kuwait and the identities of the bodies will be revealed as soon as results are announced and families of the victims will be informed as the process goes on. Earlier in June, the tripartite commission affiliated with International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) announced the discovery of human remains in al-Muthana of Samawah district, south of Iraq, believed to belong to Kuwaiti civilians and other nationals. The commission includes officials from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the US, the UK, France, and Iraq. The commission had said that the bones were handed over to the forensic department in Baghdad indicating that the DNA to be extracted from the skeletons would be compared to those of relatives of the missing persons. Iraqi authorities had handed over to Kuwait DNA samples for 32 corpses, knowing that comparing samples with the database requires further testing. In 2005, the remains of a number of Kuwaiti citizens were discovered in Iraq, while in 2011, the body remnants of Iraqi individuals were uncovered. The tripartite commission continues efforts to uncover the remains of people missing or killed during the Iraq-Kuwait 1990-1991 war.
