The United States condemned the recent unrest in southern Yemen and the separatist Southern Transitional Council’s capture of government and military positions in Aden city. A US official stressed to Asharq Al-Awsat that Washington supports the internationally-recognized legitimate government and its efforts to unite Yemen and all of its people. Earlier this month, the STC had seized control of government positions in Aden after days of clashes with the legitimate forces. It has since expanded the battles and sought to capture remaining provinces in the South. Britain meanwhile, urged the council to immediately join the dialogue that was called for by Saudi Arabia and that is aimed at ending the unrest. Saudi Arabia’s intervention helped end the Aden clashes. It has called for urgent dialogue between the legitimate government and STC. The government is refusing to take part in the talks before the separatists withdraw from Aden. London also called on the STC to join the government, saying wars are not appropriate times to take decisions that are crucial to the country’s future. British Ambassador to Yemen Michael Aron said his country and the international community will not recognize the STC, saying that popularity is not a sign of legitimacy. He said the developments in Aden were unfortunate, adding that the STC should match its words with actions when it claims to be part of the legitimacy.
