Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander-in-chief Mazloun Abdi pledged on Saturday that his forces would play a positive role in establishing stability in the region. “We announce that we will exert all efforts to achieve compatibility with the Turkish state in coordination with the US and there are preliminary agreements to establish security in the region through border points and we will be a positive party to this process,” he said. In a press conference held at the city of Hasaka, Abdi called on Damascus to negotiate with representatives of the autonomous administration and the SDF and to favor a political solution on the principle of recognizing democratic self-administration and recognizing the legitimate rights of the Kurdish people of Syria. The SDF held on Saturday the annual meeting of its military councils in the presence of 600 military and political officials. Abdi reiterated that the forces want to establish a united free Syria. “This meeting will be the basis for building a military force that will guarantee a unified free Syria,” he said. This month, Turkey and the US agreed to set up the joint operations center for the safe zone east the Euphrates river along Syria’s northeastern border without offering details on its size or the command structure of the forces that would operate there. On Saturday, the Turkish defense minister said the joint operations center had become fully operational. Last August 14, the SDF stated they had their plans for the proposed safe zone that would incorporate several local forces and would become a shield that protects against Turkish intervention into northeastern Syria but now are using softer words and are ready for peace talks. Abdi said that “ISIS remains strong and insist on destroying our homeland,” adding that the militants are widespread in the region and among populated areas through its sleeper cells. “Fighting ISIS is one of the most important topics of our meeting,” the SDF commander said.
