Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah hailed on Tuesday the “positive and constructive” steps that have been taken in efforts to “put the past behind us.” “We look forward to the outcomes of the Gulf Cooperation Council summit that will without a doubt achieve our ambitions,” he said at the start of the summit that was held in Riyadh. He hoped that the gathering of Gulf leaders in the Saudi capital was a positive sign of their determination to unite their ranks and adhere to their unity. “Our region has come under dangerous escalation that threatened its security and stability,” he remarked. “We urge calm, reason and dialogue to confront such escalation because the alternative will lead us to the unknown.” “Saudi Arabia came under attack and we had expressed and continue to express our condemnation and solidarity with our brothers in defending their security and stability,” stressed Sheikh Sabah. On Yemen, he hailed the Riyadh agreement that was signed in November by the legitimate government and Southern Transitional Council under Saudi Arabia’s sponsorship. This agreement will pave the way for the desired peace process, he added. “We are also closely monitoring with concern and pain the developments in Iraq, Lebanon, Libya and Algeria,” he stated, hoping that peace and security would prevail and that the people would overcome their crises.
