The Libyan National Army announced Saturday that three Turkish officers were killed in shelling on the capital, Tripoli. A military source told Asharq Al-Awsat that high-ranking Turkish officers were killed in the LNA’s shelling of Tripoli sea port earlier this week. A Syrian translator was also among the victims. The corpses have been transferred to Turkey via a Libyan airline affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, added the source. The revelation coincided with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan acknowledging for the first time on Saturday the death of some Turkish soldiers in the Tripoli fighting. Turkey has dispatched forces to the capital to help support the Government of National Accord (GNA) against an LNA offensive. Erdogan claimed that his forces had killed and injured some 100 LNA fighters. Meanwhile, GNA forces reiterated on Saturday accusations that the LNA was targeting civilians in Tripoli, saying three people were wounded in attacks on the al-Asfah area. They accused the LNA of repeatedly violating a recently announced ceasefire. The LNA denied the claims, saying that pro-GNA militias were constantly breaching the ceasefire that was reached last month. A prominent military commander told Asharq Al-Awsat the LNA was committed to the ceasefire despite constant provocations by the GNA-affiliated militias. Meanwhile, GNA chief Fayez al-Sarraj is expected in Geneva on Monday to attend the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council. He is set to tackle the latest developments in Libya, rights affairs and documented violations against civilians during the “aggression” against the capital.
