Ankara continued to incur losses in Libya with the Libyan National Army (LNA) announcing Saturday the downing of a Turkish drone south of the capital, Tripoli. The drone was operated by forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA). LNA spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari said the army downed the aircraft after it took off from Tripoli’s Mitiga airport. “As part of the general command, we are still completely committed to the January 12 ceasefire,” he told Asharq Al-Awsat. “Saturday’s operation is part of efforts aimed at deterring Turkish and terrorist Libyan militias that attempt to violate the ceasefire and attack our forces.” He accused them of taking advantage of the “wide room” to maneuver offered by the ceasefire in order to violate it. The LNA has repeatedly accused the GNA of allowing Turkey to transform Mitiga International Airport into a military base for operations against the army. The facility has been shut indefinitely to civilian flights after it was struck with rockets and artillery fire on Tuesday. Flights have been diverted to Misrata airport, some 200 kms east of Tripoli. Meanwhile, a high-ranking official in the LNA told Asharq Al-Awsat that the pro-GNA militias were on the verge of collapse. “The militias are incurring more and more losses as are the mercenaries that are loyal to Turkey,” he said on condition of anonymity. The official is a senior aide to LNA commander Khalifa Haftar and commander of operations at one of the Tripoli positions. The militias are suffering from a shortage of fighters despite their turning to mercenaries, he added. The LNA is calmly advancing on Tripoli, he stressed.
