Arab Leaders Offer Condolences over Mubarak’s Death

The United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Palestine offered on Tuesday their condolences to Egypt following the passing of former President Hosni Mubarak. UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, sent a cable of condolences to Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, expressing his heartfelt condolences and solace on the death of Mubarak. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also dispatched similar cables of condolences to the Egyptian ruler. "Today, the Arab world has lost a prominent leader who devoted his life to the service of his country and the Arab world. Hosni Mubarak had a special relationship with the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and a strong bond with President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who together helped bolster ties between the two countries further,” read a statement from the Ministry of Presidential Affairs carried by the UAE news agency (WAM). Sheikh Khalifa ordered for the UAE flag to be flown at half-mast across the countrys government bodies and diplomatic missions abroad for a one-day period. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his “deep sorrow” over Mubarak’s death, hailing his stances in supporting the Palestinian cause and people in obtaining their legitimate rights. Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber al-Sabah sent a cable of condolences to Sisi. Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri tweeted his condolences to the Egyptian leadership, saying Mubarak’s death closes a chapter rife in achievements in Egypt and the Arab nation’s history. Mubarak died Tuesday at the age of 91 weeks after undergoing surgery. He ruled Egypt for 30 years until he resigned following mass protests against his rule in 2011. In power, Mubarak promoted Middle East peace and, from 2004, backed economic liberalization measures that delivered sturdy growth.
