The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor called for the immediate release of all Palestinian prisoners in light of the alarming exponential spread of Covid-19 around the world. “For instance, in Israel, hundreds of political prisoners are now in grave danger after a psychiatrist in touch with prisoners tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) as well as another jailer,” it said in a statement on Tuesday. Prison cells in Israel “are among the most vulnerable areas to the spread of the Covid-19, as they are often overcrowded and essentially lack proper hygiene and infrastructure necessary to mitigate the spread of the virus to inmates,” the statement added. Two days earlier, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh demanded the immediate release of Palestinian captives especially the children and the ill. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates denounced the suppression and racist arrests by Israeli police against Palestinians who launched a campaign to raise awareness on Covid-19 outbreak in Jerusalem.
