The rival governments in Libya intensified their preventive measures to combat the new coronavirus despite their announcement that no case has yet been registered in the conflict-ridden country. The interim government in the east imposed a ten-day curfew that will end on April 3. LNA Chief of Staff Abdel-Razeq Nathouri, who also heads the higher committee combating the coronavirus, said the panel decided to impose a 24-hour curfew for ten days. Violators will be penalized, he warned, before adding that the Libyan people are capable of “defeating their enemies” and confronting the threat of the coronavirus. “We don’t want the situation in Libya to escalate as it has in countries where the virus has spread, especially Italy,” he said in an address to the people. “Despite the severity of our measures, they are for your safety.” He assured that Libya has enough goods and food supplies to last five months and more. In the west, the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) vowed that any violator of the curfew would be imprisoned for no more than six months and fined no more than 200 dinars. The GNA had declared a 12-hour curfew in regions under its control. The government has also sought to end public gatherings, urging the people to commit to guidelines for the safety of the general public. The GNA’s health ministry revealed that it had received an offer from its Chinese counterpart to hold an international training program to introduce experts in Libya on the protocols Beijing had adopted in diagnosing and treating coronavirus patients. The training would be held virtually, explained the ministry.
