GCC Interior Ministers Agree to Unify Efforts to Confront Coronavirus

Interior Ministers of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have agreed to unify efforts to confront the risks of COVID-19, as Gulf states record an increasing number of cases. The meeting comes in light of the current international developments due to the repercussions of the spread of the emerging virus. The Ministers also discussed the latest developments in GCC states confronting the coronavirus as well as security measures taken as part of the efforts to limit its spread. Held via video conferencing, the meeting was chaired by UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and with the participation of GCC Secretary-General Nayef al-Hajraf. General Directorate of Security Relations and Media of Kuwait’s Interior Ministry issued a statement saying that the ministers agreed that the GCC General Secretariat would coordinate to hold a virtual meeting of representatives of the ministries of interior of the member states whenever necessary to coordinate security efforts to limit the spread of the emerging coronavirus. The Interior Ministers agreed that GCC’s General Secretariat would provide all the member states with the information it receives from the Interior Ministry of any member state about the precautionary security measures taken to limit the spread of the emerging coronavirus, according to a statement issued. The Ministers reiterated the previously agreed upon decision banning any citizen from leaving to any other country except with the same document in which he entered into the GCC states, namely the passport, when resuming flights. The attendees appreciated the efforts made by the GCC states in dealing with the coronavirus, through precautionary measures as well as health preventive measures taken on land and air ports, in order to ensure the safety of citizens, residents, and people traveling between GCC countries, They lauded efforts of the medical and technical teams in the GCC states and all countries of the world in confronting the pandemic and saving lives. They also praised the tireless efforts of security and military sectors in the GCC states and their contribution to curbing the spread of the virus. They called upon citizens and residents to adhere more to the precautionary measures announced to limit the spread of the virus.
