JEDDAH — Members of the Jeddah Tamil Sangam (JTS) have initiated a mechanism to ensure that poor workers and families in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu continue to receive food and other essentials as long as economic conditions warrant it in view of the lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus. This would not have been possible without the generosity of the compassionate JTS supporters who have poured in funds for the purpose. Tamil Sangam Executive Committee member Covai Ganesh and his group in Coimbatore are serving lunch and water bottles to poor and police constables who are standing in the scorching sun as well as migrant workers from other states. Similarly, Abdul Aziz and his colleagues explored an evidence-based approach to extend much-needed breakfast to people who have lost their livelihoods in Kumbakonam. Vijayan, another executive committee member and District Councillor at Thiruvaikavur and Kapisthalam near Thanjavur, supplies groceries and meals to isolated villagers and face masks to health workers with the amazing support from government authorities in identifying localities where people are hungry and help to distribute the food there. In Salem, Executive Committee Member Premnath with Sevakan volunteers provide lunch to people daily while making them understand, prevent and mitigate these challenges and simultaneously preparing for early recovery programs. Another JTS Executive Member Jerald who is an Assistant Professor in Madurai College, along with his friends’ delivers the needed clothing to street dwellers who were at their wits" end due to sudden loss of their jobs. Similar help is offered to the people in distress by Rafia and his group in and around Adirampatnam; Jayraj in Chengalput as per the guidance of Jeddah Tamil Sangam and in Tirupur Miss Janani providing food to homeless people. In Chennai, many homeless peoples are benefitted by JTS team through Gold Heart Foundation, by providing food at night times due to strict lockdown rules.
