MUMBAI — A major fire broke out in the basement of the Independent Shopping Center outside Borivali West Railway station early Saturday, officials said. The blaze was first noticed around 3 a.m. in the basement which is a big hub of mobile phones and accessories. It quickly spread to the ground and two upper floors affecting several other areas including garments, footwear and jewellery shops. At least 14 fire tenders rushed to fight the blaze, the cause of which is not known as the shopping plaza is closed due to the ongoing lockdown. There were no casualties reported. Chief Fire Officer (CFO) PS Rahangdale said that a fire robot was deployed along with the firefighters to douse the fire. "The fire flames spread to the upper floors of the shopping center. A fire robot has been deployed along with our team. Fourteen fire engines and 13 jumbo tanker are being used to douse the fire. In the next two hours, the fire might come under control," he said. The security incharge of the complex claimed that the fire broke out due to a short circuit at one of the shops. Last month, a fire incident was reported at the office of the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait in South Mumbai"s Nariman Point area. In another incident, a level-two fire was reported in a few shops at the iconic Crawford Market last month. — Agencies
