UN Security Council welcomes Saudi efforts to revitalize Riyadh Agreement

NEW YORK — The United Nations Security Council welcomed the efforts made by Saudi Arabia to revitalize the Riyadh Agreement, stressing the importance of its rapid and effective implementation. The Council affirmed its support for the political process in Yemen as contained in the relevant United Nations resolutions, including resolution 2216 (2015), as well as the initiative of the Gulf Cooperation Council and its implementation mechanism and the results of the National Dialogue Conference. This came in a press briefing by the Council after its virtual meeting on Tuesday evening on the situation in the Middle East and Yemen. The Security Council members expressed their unwavering support for the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, calling on the parties to urgently agree to mediation proposals, reaffirming Resolution 2532, and expressing support for the call of the United Nations Secretary-General to stop hostilities. Members called on all donors to expedite donations, pay their pledges, and save lives, expressing their deep concern about the lack of funding that exacerbates the risk of acute malnutrition. The Security Council expressed grave concern over the increased danger that might lead to the cracking or explosion of the (Safer) oil tanker, and over conflicting Houthi militia’s statements regarding the United Nations" access to the tanker. It called for concrete measures to be taken as soon as possible, including approval of entry permits, a safe travel route to the tanker, and all other logistical arrangements, to facilitate the unconditional access of United Nations" technical experts to assess the tanker"s condition, make any possible urgent repairs, make recommendations on the safe oil extraction, and ensure close cooperation with the United Nations. The members of the Security Council expressed their aspiration to implement concrete measures without delay, reaffirming their strong commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen.
