RIYADH — The creation of a sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital is Saudi Arabia’s price for normalizing relations with Israel, according to Prince Turki Al-Faisal, who has served as the Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States. “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has set a price for concluding peace between Israel and the Arabs — it is the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as capital, as provided for by the initiative of the late King Abdullah.” Prince Turki made the remarks in a column he wrote in Asharq Al-Awsat on Friday. The remarks follow the announcement last week of a historic agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel to normalize diplomatic ties in exchange for the latter’s suspension of the annexation of Palestinian lands. The deal raised speculation that other Arab countries might follow but Prince Turki called on them to put a price for normalizing ties with Israel. “Any Arab state that is considering following the UAE should demand in return a price, and it should be an expensive price,” he wrote. That 2002 Arab League plan offered Israel normalized ties in return for Israeli withdrawal from all territories — the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem — captured in the 1967 Middle East war, and a Palestinian state there. But Prince Turki also backed the UAE’s decision, saying Abu Dhabi secured a key concession — a halt to Israeli annexation plans. Justifying the UAE’s move, Prince Turki said that its decision stems from the principle of state sovereignty. The UAE has all the rights to take any decision it sees is in the interest of the country and its people. He denounced the leaders of Qatar, Turkey, and Iran, who were quick to accuse the UAE of treason and stabbing in the back, warning the Palestinian who jumped on the bandwagon that it will gain nothing from them except empty slogans. Blasting Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for threatening to sever ties with the UAE for its decision, Prince Turki said: “Here is the Turkish president saying that he will withdraw his ambassador from the UAE, while his ambassador is relaxing and having fun in the Zionist country, and hundreds of thousands of Israeli tourists are having fun in Turkey’s cabarets and bars, not to mention the existing military and intelligence cooperation between the two countries.” “As for Khamenei, the successor of the one who ignited the discord among Muslims — Shiites and Sunnis? Have we forgotten the cooperation of his predecessor and his access to Israeli weapons during the Iran-Iraq war? Don’t we know that Iran directs its militias and missiles to kill Muslims in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia instead of Israel? Prince Turki remarked. Condemning the leadership of Qatar, the former Saudi ambassador said that it only knows to insult, curse and pay royalties to terrorists, both Shiites and Sunnis. Prince Turki asked the Palestinian leadership not to forget that the interests of the Palestinians lie with the United Arab Emirates, which hosts more than three hundred thousand Palestinians.
