RIYADH — Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) said on Monday it has bought 860,000 tons of wheat as part of its fifth and last tender for 2020 from the European Union, Australia, the Black Sea, North and South America except Canada. In a statement carried by Saudi Press Agency, Governor of SAGO Ahmad Al-Fares stated that the amount imported wheat would be delivered in 14 shipments — 8 ships carrying 490,000 tons for Jeddah Islamic Port and 6 ships with 370,000 tons for King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam — between February and March 2021. The governor said that this batch of imported wheat aims to meet the local needs for wheat and maintain the strategic wheat reserve. He also said that a total of 23 international companies specialized in grain trade were invited, of which 15 competed. Five international companies submitted the lowest bids in the tender for the required shipments.
