DHAHRAN — The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) launched a contemporary art exhibition that gathers together a large section of artists and art lovers under one roof. The exhibition, which was launched on Wednesday, will run through nine months. It comes as one of the most important art fairs at Ithra, as it contains a huge collection of visual tricks through a colorful collection of contemporary art works. The exhibition, which collects artworks from a selection of contemporary plastic artists, seeks contemplation as the art works and optical illusions will at first glance create a visual first impression devoid of true meaning. It will also enable visitors to interact and focus in the folds of the artistic content, and to elicit the meanings of the displayed visual arts. The exhibition displays 26 artworks, including 16 pieces belonging to the Ithra collection, and four works specially made for the exhibition, in addition to six works borrowed from different international artists and exhibitions. Among the most notable works is the work of Saudi artist Walaa Fadl titled “Light upon Light,” named after Surat Al-Nur from the Holy Qur’an. Also on display will be Carsten Höller"s “Six Moving Doors” — six equidistant mirror-covered moving doors that operate automatically. In addition, artist Aisha Khaled will participate with her work “Water Seeks Thirst” to reflect the artist’s personal relationship with Saudi Arabia through the use of gold-plated steel fabrics and pins. Artist Robert Irwin will also participate with his work “South by Southwest”, which reflects the artist’s ongoing experiments with the perceptual abilities of fluorescent lighting, and complementary reactions to color, shade and spacing. On the sidelines of the exhibition, a variety of programs, workshops, dialogues and meetings will be held to discuss individual interpretations of the displayed artworks.
