One person is unaccounted for after reports of explosions in a large fire at an industrial premises in Warwickshire, police have said. Residents in Leamington Spa were evacuated as a plume of thick smoke could be seen rising above the fire on Juno Drive on an industrial estate in the town. Warwickshire police said businesses and houses near Juno Drive had been evacuated. Warwickshire fire service said it was called at 10.39am on Friday to a large building fire and urged people living within 70 metres of the area to keep doors and windows closed. West Midlands ambulance service also confirmed it had sent two paramedic officers and its hazardous area response team to the scene. Public Health England issued a warning saying the smoke and ash from the fire could worsen health problems such as asthma and heart conditions, and advised people to stay away and carry their medication if nearby. Road closures were also in place. The local Labour MP, Matt Western, said he had heard the fire may involve chemicals from a plastics business unit. He said: “Leamington has been shaken to its core by the serious fire in Juno Drive near Tachbrook Park industrial estate. The scale of the fire is staggering. I’ve spoken with police and fire chiefs who are keeping me informed. “I’m told Warwickshire fire and rescue service has deployed a dozen fire tenders and crews – and chiefs are confident that they can contain the fire. It is extremely worrying for our community and I am concerned for employees who were on site. “I want to thank the emergency services for their professionalism and bravery, and residents for their adherence to guidance. It is very important to keep at least 70 metres away from the scene and please close doors and windows if you are near the area. Avoid breathing in any smoke and stay indoors.”
