Officers Ahmed Jaber Nassar and Abdul Rahman Adel died in the exchange while Haitham Wajih and Lt. Col. Ahmed Salah were injured during the raid targeting the criminals. The Egyptian Interior Ministry said in a statement that the deaths occurred during a “continuation of the efforts of the Ministry of Interior’s agencies to combat crime in all its forms, especially the pursuit and seizure of dangerous criminal elements, and during a mission to target and arrest members of a very dangerous gang formation for committing several incidents of coercive theft with firearms.” “After being identified and targeted in the Balabasa area in Ismailia governorate, east of Cairo, the gang members opened fire toward the police forces, which resulted in the death of two officers, the killing of one of the members of the formation, and the arrest of the remaining three in their possession of three automatic weapons and a cartridge rifle, and legal measures were taken,” the ministry said. Police had called on people to stay at home until the situation was brought under control. The Egyptian Public Prosecutor, Hamada El-Sawy, ordered an investigation into the incident. The Egyptian Public Prosecution said in a statement that it had received notification of the death of two police officers and the injury of two members of its forces during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who was also killed during the incident. Egyptian security investigations concluded that one of the deceased criminals and two others had trafficked in firearms and ammunition and the Public Prosecution had authorized their arrest. Police went to the suspects’ location to arrest one of them, who started firing shots, killing two officers and wounded two others, and the accused died during an exchange of gunshots.
