RIYADH: Japan is set to test its first 4-billion-yen ($35 million) hydrogen-fueled train next month, Bloomberg reported. The train is developed by East Japan Railway Company, in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. With a single filling of hydrogen, the train – also referred to as Hybari – is projected to travel as much as 140 kilometers at an estimated speed of 100 kilometers per hour. East Japan Railway aims to use the train as an attempt to substitute its diesel fleet and hopes to target export sales of it. The launch of the train aligns with Asian country’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Japan has vowed to use hydrogen as a vital clean energy source to achieve net zero. Accordingly, the government has announced plans to raise hydrogen usage as much as 200 million tons by 2050. In addition, energy corporations in the country such as Iwatani Corp. are working on establishing hydrogen centric supply chains in order to push down its costs.
