Saudi fellow doctor Amr Abu Khashaba, who is specialized in retina surgery, took the lead in restoring eye sight of a French patient by implanting a new lens. Dr. Amr performed the operation along with his French colleagues within the Saudi-French Medical Program. Dr. Amr and other doctors at La Croix-Rousse University Hospital in Lyon came up with a different and novel method for lens implants, which the Saudi doctor himself applied to the patient. This method, which was so far applied only in a few cases around the world, is characterized by rapid completion, reducing the length of the incision, and eliminating the need for sewing the lens inside the eye, says Dr. Amr, who is from King Abdulaziz University of Rabigh. Speaking to Al-Arabiya.net, Dr. Amr said the patient had his right eye injured during a quarrel one month before the operation. The injury caused the natural crystalline lens of his right eye fall. It had to be surgically removed and replaced. Dr. Amr noted that though there were many ways to implant lenses, it was not possible to put the lens in the normal position as there was no membrane. So, he had to find a new and different way to fix it. There were traditional methods that could be followed, but Dr. Amr thought of a novel way to restore the sight to this patient. He said the French doctors initially opposed the suggested method for replacing the lens but eventually they reached consensus after extensive discussions with other members of the medical team. Dr. Amr said the operation took about one and a half hours. After the examinations were completed, he was able to perform the operation under local anesthesia. Regarding the patient’s attitude to the surgery, Dr. Amr said the patient was not enthusiastic about the operation because he was already suffering from cancer. “After completion of the surgical procedure, the patient looked at me and said he wanted to treat his cancer. He was expressing his optimism and happiness after the success of the operation.” Referring to his future plans, Dr. Amr said that he would return to Saudi Arabia. He thanked the Saudi leadership for the big support under the scholarship program to enable Saudi doctors to refine their expertise and achieve excellence in the company of international experts.
