Apps in Saudi Arabia: High and varied usage with people seeing clear positives and negatives

The Saudi Center for Public Opinion Polling conducted a survey into apps usage among the adult (18+) population of the Kingdom. The survey was conducted among a representative sample of 1,220 respondents during February 2022. The results confirmed that WhatsApp has the highest top-of-mind awareness with 33% mentioning it first. This was followed by Snapchat with 30%, Twitter (20%) and Instagram (7%) as being the first app mentioned that came to mind. The study showed that 92% of Saudis use WhatsApp, 79% use YouTube, 77% SnapChat , 61% Twitter, while Instagram and Tik Tok account for 58% and 51%, respectively. The results showed relatively low usage of Facebook and LinkedIn (88% not using these apps), noting the specific job-search and recruitment focus of LinkedIn. 4% of the respondents claimed that they did not use any of these applications. Interestingly, males tend to use Twitter and YouTube more, while females tend to use Instagram, Snapchat and Tik Tok applications more. In terms of age, the results revealed that people over 45 use WhatsApp, YouTube and Twitter relatively more, while the younger group between 18 and 29 showed higher relative usage of Snapchat, Tik Tok, and Instagram. In terms of the most preferred application, the results revealed that WhatsApp was most preferred (32%), followed by Snapchat (26%), with 12% preferring Twitter, 9% preferring YouTube, 8% for Tik Tok and 7% preferring Instagram. Asked about their preferred apps, people who favored YouTube, WhatsApp and Twitter tended to be more male, while respondents preferring Instagram and Snapchat tended to be more female. In terms of age, people who prefer WhatsApp were older, whilst those preferring TikTok and Snapchat tended to be younger. The people interviewed were asked about the positive and negative effects of using apps. 75% quoted positive effects, mentioning that apps facilitated communication with others and supported them in self-learning, and exchanging information quickly. Conversely, 48% of the respondents also believed that apps have negative effects, causing time wastage, health problems and isolation from society. Respondents mentioned their concerns around the spreading of false information and the weakening of family relations.
