Germans secure victory in second period of extra time 5-day tournament featured some of world’s best handball clubs SC Magdeburg have won the IHF Super Globe 2022 by beating Barcelona 41-39 after extra time in Sunday’s final at the Dammam Sports Hall. The German team, defending the title they won last year, led 21-17 at halftime but by full time the scores were level at 35-35. The two sides remained all square at 38-38 at the end of the first period of extra time, but the Germans pulled away in the second period with two deciding goals. The final brought an end to the 12-team tournament, which was organized by the Saudi Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation. This year’s event was the 15th and largest since its launch in 1997. Kielce of Poland finished third after beating Al-Ahly of Egypt 35-26, while Esperance of Tunisia defeated Al-Khaleej of Saudi Arabia in the match to decide fifth and sixth. In the lower half of the standings, SL Benfica of Portugal beat Taubate 32-27 to take seventh place and leave their Brazilian opponents in eighth. Al-Kuwait beat Mudhar of Saudi Arabia 34-19 in the match to decide ninth and 10th, while the day’s action began with Sydney Uni beating Ministros 33-29 to claim 11th place, leaving the Mexicans with the wooden spoon.
