Turkey approves law that increases government control of judiciary

Istanbul, Rabi'II 15, 1435, Feb 15, 2014, SPA -- The Turkish Parliament on Saturday approved amendments to a law that will increase the government's control over the country's top judiciary body, after a tense all-night session, dpa reported. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party had proposed the amendments, which will enable the justice minister to take over several powers from the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), including the ability to appoint judges. The board is responsible the appointment and promotion of judges and prosecutors.
