Security Council on Monday expressed willingness to meet over the dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, following four days of clashes along the border that reportedly have killed several people. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday called on the United Nations to intervene and create a buffer zone with U.N. peacekeepers between the two countries. “Members of the council expressed great concern at the aggravation of the tension on the border,” said Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti of Brazil, which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for February. “They called for a ceasefire and urged the parties to resolve the situation peacefully, Viotta said. “They expressed their willingness to hold a Security Council meeting.” On Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was “deeply concerned” by the violence and called for a cessation to hostilities.
