New York, Shawwal 26, 1432, Sep 24, 2011, SPA - The Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council has condemned what is happening in Yemen in the way of resorting to the use of weapons, especially heavy weapons, against unarmed demonstrators, calling for restraint and commitment to the full and immediate ceasefire and formation of a commission of inquiry into recent events that led to the killing of innocent Yemeni people. The Council also expressed its grief and sorrow for the dead and wounded Yemeni people and sympathies and condolences to their families and wished the injured a speedy recovery. This came during the 37th extraordinary meeting which was held on Friday in New York under the chairmanship of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates and Chairman of the current session of the Ministerial Council. The Council considered the report of the GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani on the latest developments in Yemen during his visit from September 19-22, 2011. The Council affirmed keenness of the GCC countries to help the brothers in Yemen to reach a consensus for immediate and honest implementation of the initiative of the GCC as it is, and looked forward to the immediate signing by President Ali Abdullah Saleh of it and the implementation of the peaceful transition of power in order to preserve Yemen's security, stability and territorial integrity; respect the will and choices of its people; and meet their aspirations for change and reform, especially as the security and humanitarian situation in Yemen cannot be further delayed. --SPA 10:14 LOCAL TIME 07:14 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/927958
