London, Sept 21, SPA --British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has suggestedthat a crucial climate change conference later this year should beattended by heads of governments to help break a possible "dangerousdeadlock" in the vital UN-led discussions, according to dpa. Reports in Britain today said that Brown would urge world leadersat the United Nations General Assembly in New York and at the Groupof 20 (G20) summit in Pittsburgh to consider attending the climatesummit to be held in Copenhagen in December. The summit, so far intended to be held at the level of environmentministers, is expected to hammer out a framework on climate changeregulations following the expiry of the Kyoto Protocol. "The negotiations are proceeding so slowly that a deal is in gravedanger," Brown wrote in an article in Monday's edition of US magazineNewsweek. "Securing an agreement in Copenhagen will require worldleaders to bridge our remaining differences and seize theseopportunities. But I believe it can be done. And if it is necessaryto clinch the deal, I will personally go to Copenhagen to achieveit." Brown, the first international leader to declare his readiness toattend the talks, has urged world leaders to make similar pledges, said the report. In his view, the climate change discussions are as much about theenvironment as they are about stimulating the global economy andinvestment.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/701939
