Berlin, Oct 15, SPA -- The future German government is likely to beneutral about whether Turkey should join the European Union, sourcesin the coalition parties said today, after inter-party talks whichlasted into the small hours of the morning, according to dpa. The previous day, EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn had notedsome progress in Turkey's membership bid, though it remains stymiedby Turkey's refusal to let in Greek Cypriot ships and planes. Admitting Turkey to the EU is controversial. French and Germanleaders have said Ankara should get "privileged partnership" instead. So far, Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union(CDU), the Bavaria-only Christian Social Union (CSU) and the FreeDemocratic Party (FDP) have yet to announce the stance of theirplanned coalition towards Turkey. The compromise that emerged from the late Wednesday talks wouldbind Merkel for the next four years. Party sources told the German Press Agency dpa an agreed draftpolicy would say that Berlin should be "open to whatever comes out"of EU-Turkey accession talks. That uncommitted stance resembles theofficial view of Merkel's last coalition, with the Social Democrats. The draft, drawn up by negotiators reporting back to the partyleaders, would say that Berlin should be open to the accessionprocess ending with agreement or disagreement. If the EU refusedTurkey, Berlin would favour the privileged partnership instead.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/709430
