negative for security Berlin, July 12, SPA -- Germany's foreign minister said Tuesday thatspurning Turkey's efforts to join the European Union wouldhave "negative consequences" for the continent'ssecurity. Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer's warning came a dayafter Germany's conservative opposition presented aplatform for likely September elections in which itrejected Turkish EU membership. "It shows considerable shortsightedness not to see whatsignificance firmly anchoring Turkey (in Europe) has andwhat significance the modernization of this great Islamiccountry has," Fischer said after meeting EU EnlargementCommissioner Olli Rehn. "Given that promises have been made for 43 years, allthose who think we could slam the door in Turkey's facetoday must be clear what negative consequences that wouldhave for European security," Fischer was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. He added that the continent's security "today is definedabove all in our regional neighborhood _ the Near andMiddle East."--SPA1413 Local Time 1113 GMT www.spa.gov.sa/276323
