Attack kills 12 insurgents in southern Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, July 12, SPA -- International troops and Afghan police killed 12 Taliban insurgents in a gunbattlein southern Afghanistan, police said Sunday. The joint force attacked a compound north of the capitalof Uruzgan province where the militants were hidingSaturday evening, sparking the fighting, police spokesmanMohammad Musa said. He said no Afghan police orinternational troops were killed, according to a report of the Associated Press. In eastern Kunar province, meanwhile, one civilian waskilled and five wounded when shelling from a gunbattlebetween insurgents and Afghan and international forces hita house. Provincial Police Chief Gen. Abdul Jalal saideveryone in the house initially survived Saturday's blast,but one man died from his injuries after being rushed to ahospital. Jalal said it was unclear which side fired theshots that hit the house.
