The Secretary General lamented the mounting phenomenon of Islamophobia in the West. He also emphasized the need to rectify the misperceptions in the Islamic world to present the non-Muslim world as hostile to Muslims or conspiring against Islam. In this respect he called for efforts to foster mutual understanding and respect. The Secretary General praised the efforts exerted by the US Special Envoy Sada Cumber, and expressed the hope that the initiative of President Bush will be maintained under the next administration as it proved to be useful.
