4 civilians killed in southern Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 26, SPA -- NATO forces killed fourcivilians and wounded three others Saturday when they firedat a vehicle that did not stop at a checkpoint inAfghanistan's volatile south, the alliance said. The latest incident occurred in the Sangin district ofHelmand province in the south, the Associated Press reported. A NATO statement said the vehicle was directed to stop butdrove on. NATO forces fired warning shots away from thevehicle but were «forced to fire at it when it refused tostop, fearing an insurgent attack, » it said. NATO medical personnel tended to the wounded civilians,including taking them by helicopter to a hospital, it said. The bodies of the dead were taken to their village by twocivilians who were not hurt during the encounter.
