Washington, Jan 27, SPA -- The White House on Monday stressed the importance of shifting U.S. military focus from Iraq to Afghanistan. In playing out U.S. President Barack Obama’s campaign promise, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the United States will move to shift more combat troops to Afghanistan. The move also comes in conjunction with Obama’s promise to “responsibly” withdraw troops from Iraq—a war that Obama opposed from its onset. The shift to Afghanistan is important as there has been a “significant deterioration” in Afghanistan, Gibbs said. “We have a very dangerous situation there,” he added, pointing to the widely-believed existence of terror havens in the ungovernable regions of Afghanistan. There are terrorists in the country that are “likely planning again” to attack the United States, Gibbs said. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/630004
