UN Security Council backs Somali peace talks

DJIBOUTI, June 03, SPA -- Representatives of Somalia's civil society warned Tuesday of a worsening humanitarian crisis andcalled for the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops, saying theirdeparture would accelerate a political settlement of thecountry's 18-year conflict, the Associated Press reported. The representatives from nine groups met members of theU.N. Security Council, who came to Djibouti to encourageSomalia's transitional government and an oppositionalliance to hold direct peace talks. Britain's U.N. ambassador John Sawers and South Africa'sU.N. Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo, who are co-leading theSecurity Council trip to Djibouti, reiterated at the endthat both the government and the opposition want Ethiopiantroops to withdraw.
