Kenyan rivals agree to end violence, complete talks on immediate crisis in 15 days

ELDORET, Kenya, February 01, SPA -- Rival parties in Kenya agreed totake immediate action to end violence after a month of deadly turmoil over a disputed presidential election, the former U.N. chief mediating their talks said Friday, according to The Associated Press. The agreement came after a new upsurge in brutal deaths,this time sparked by a police officer's killing the daybefore of an opposition lawmaker. The two sides signed a four-point agenda that said theywould complete talks within 15 days on measures to end thepolitical crisis. «We have agreed (on) an agenda covering both short-termissues and also long-term issues,» former U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan told a news conference aftermediating talks with representatives of President MwaiKibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/523141
