11 rebels, soldier killed in Sri Lanka clashes

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, October 14, SPA -- Eleven Tamil Tiger rebels and a government soldier were killed in separate clashes reported across Sri Lanka's restive northern region, the militarysaid Sunday. The first clash Saturday was reported in Vilathikulamvillage of Vavuniya district in which four guerrillas werekilled, an official at the Defense Ministry's informationcenter said. Later, soldiers attacked a group of rebels across thedefense line in Muhamalai, an area that separatesgovernment-administered territory and the rebels' ministatenorth of Vavuniya and killed two of them, the official saidon condition of anonymity citing policy. Troops and rebels clashed in Periyathampanai village, alsoin Vavuniya, twice on Saturday leaving five rebels and asoldier dead, the official said. The Associated Press quoted rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan as saying that only one guerrilla died in Periyathampanai and accused the government of exaggerating figures.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/490338
