Beijing, June 30, SPA -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reached an agreement with North Korea on the closure of its main nuclear reactor, the Chinese press agency "Xinhua" reported Saturday. Olli Heinonen, head of the IAEA delegation to North Korea, said in Beijing Saturday after returning from Pjongjang that the discussions were "fruitful." "We have moved to an understanding on how to do ratification and monitoring on the Yongbyon facilities when they will be shut down," said Heinonen, who is the IAEA's deputy director general. Heinonen flew to Beijing Saturday after wrapping up a five-day visit to North Korea, which included the UN nuclear watchdog's first trip to the Yongbyon reactor since inspectors were expelled from thecountry in 2002. The Yongbyon reactor, 100 kilometers north of Pyongyang, is still in operation, Heinonen said, but five facilities are expected to be shut down as part of a denuclearization pact agreed between NorthKorea, the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia. In return, North Korea is to receive energy and economic aid.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/463551
