US seeks Serb backing for more talks on Kosovo's future

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 10, SPA -- A senior U.S. official will seek Serbia's backing Tuesday for more negotiations over Kosovo's demands for independence. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried said inKosovo on Monday that «a limited period of negotiations»was necessary between Serbs and Kosovo's ethnic Albanians. In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said that the United States was willing to allow an additional period of weeks or months for talks. Daniel Fried meets Tuesday with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, the Associated Press reported. The U.S. and European Union have renewedtheir pressure for quick U.N. Security Council action toput Kosovo on the road to independence.
