ANKARA, June 15, SPA _ Turkey's president on Friday called for a referendum on whether the people _ instead ofParliament _ should elect the new president. Parliament voted last month in favor of a constitutionalamendment that allows direct popular election, overridingan initial presidential veto of the measure. President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who cannot veto a bill asecond time, called for a referendum on the issue, ratherthan endorsing the measure himself.
