United Nations, May 09, SPA -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the chairman of the African Union (AU) on Wednesday appointed Rodolphe Adada of the Congo to be the joint U.N.-AU special representative for Darfur, U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said. The Joint AU-UN special representative for Darfur will head the AU-U.N. peacekeeping mission in Darfur and oversee the implementation of its mandate, and be responsible for the mission's management and functioning, Montas told reporters. Adada's mission is in accordance with the agreement reached at the high-level AU meeting in Addis Ababa on the situation in Darfur last November. Adada has served since 1997 as Congolese Minister for Foreign Affairs and has been advisor to President Denis Sassou-Nguesso. --SPA www.spa.gov.sa/448102
