ISLAMABAD, FEB 24, SPA -- Pakistan and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed Safeguards Agreement on Pakistan s nuclear power plant, CHASHMA-2. The agreement was signed by Ambassador Shahbaz on behalf of the Government of Pakistan and IAEA Director General Dr Mohamed ElBaradei in Vienna, says an official statement. In November last, the IAEA Board of Governors had unanimously approved the Safeguards Agreement between Pakistan and IAEA in respect of CHASHMA-2 nuclear power plant. Pakistan s two research reactors (PARR-I and PARR2) and two nuclear power plants (KANUPP and CHASHMA-1) are already under IAEA safeguards. Pakistan has been fulfilling its obligations in respect of these agreements and looks forward to continued cooperation with the Agency within the framework of applicable safeguards agreements in future as well, the statement said. CHASNUPP-2 is part of Pakistan s Energy Security Plan , that envisages an increase in nuclear power generation from the current 425 MWe to 8800 MWe by the year 2030 to meet its growing energy demands. The statement said the conclusion of the agreement is a success for Pakistan and recognition of its non-proliferation commitments.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/427764
