ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN, AUG 27, SPA -- More than 25 army commandos, a leading warring tribal chieftain and over six dozens of his supporting tribesmen were killed in an operation in the mountainous areas of Pakistan’s Balochistan province Saturday night, officials said. Curfew was imposed in the Balochistan capital of Quetta for indefinite period of time due to violence on Sunday. The riots erupted after the killing of tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, who headed the Jamhoori Watan Party. Mobs attacked on public property, patrol pumps, banks and fired on police. Heavy deployment of army troops, paramilitary troops and police has been made in Quetta. Bugti’s supporters set tyres on fire and torched several vehicles. Some time back, Bugti fled his native town and took position in mountains to fight against security forces. The elite commandos hailed from the Special Services Group (SSG) of the Pakistan Army. Officials said that the fighting was going on for the past three days, claiming several casualties on both sides. Air strikes were also conducted to flush out Bugti and his cohorts. Bugti’s hideout was tracked down through the satellite tracking system. An army helicopter was also damaged in the operation, officials said. They said that the situation would be clear in a couple of days.--SPA www.spa.gov.sa/385245
