United Nations, April 21, SPA -- The U.N. Security Council met Friday on Western Sahara and pushed for direct talks between Morocco and the Frente Polisario, which represents the Western Saharan government, in order to settle the issue of Africa's last colony. In a report to the council, the United Nations recommended that the Security Council call on the parties Morocco and the Frente Polisario to enter into negotiations without preconditions, with a view to achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution that will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara. Morocco wants Western Sahara to be an autonomous region. The Frente Polisario wants to hold a U.N.-monitored referendum on independence or remaining as part of Morocco.--MORE www.spa.gov.sa/442865
