LONDON, Oct 30, SPA -- Britain said Monday it was evacuating some civilian staff from its consulate in Basra, Iraq, after mortar and rocket attacks by insurgents. The government said some Foreign Office and Department for International Development workers would be moved from the Basra consulate _ a former palace of deposed leader Saddam Hussein _ to the airport outside the city. «It is on a temporary basis and it is in response toincreased threats from mortar and rocket attacksspecifically on the compound where the consul-general is based,» a Foreign Office spokeswoman said, on thegovernment's customary condition of anonymity.
