TBILISI, Georgia, Oct. 9, SPA -- Police clashed with supporters ofan opposition party who protested over the results of localelections in a Georgian town, officials and news reportssaid according to The Associated Press. Several police and protesters were slightly injured in thefighting, which broke out when demonstrators tried to forcetheir way into the local government headquarters inAkhalkalaki, said Georgy Khachidze, regional representativeof President Mikhail Saakashvili. About 300 people, mostly supporters of a moderateopposition party called Industry Will Save Georgia, hadgathered to protest elections in which only one of theparty's candidates was declared the winner of a seat in thelocal legislative body. Opposition leaders have alleged local and regionalelections held last week in the former Soviet republic wereriddled with fraud. Saakashvili has claimed his party wonat least 70 percent of the votes nationwide, but fullresults have not been released. The press service of the Interior Ministry also said anunspecified number of police and protesters were injured inthe clash at the government building, which houses thelocal election commission in the town 300 kilometers (185miles) southeast of the capital, Tbilisi.
